Take Immediate Action Against Exploitation of Children in Dance Groups, Theatres, says Patna High Court: Patna, Bihar – The Patna High Court has issued a stern directive to the Bihar government, ordering immediate action against the rampant trafficking and exploitation of children in orchestra, dance, and theatre groups across the state. The order came during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that highlighted the alleged inaction of state authorities in addressing these illicit practices.
A Division Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar and Justice Partha Sarthy passed the order, also seeking a comprehensive response from the State government regarding the PIL. The petition underscores that children are being trafficked and subjected to various forms of exploitation under the guise of employment in performing arts.
The PIL was filed by “Just Rights For Children Alliance,” an NGO dedicated to child protection. The organization’s plea seeks specific directions for the State government to formulate a robust, multi-stakeholder strategy and a statewide action plan. This plan aims to regulate, register, and rigorously monitor these performance groups to prevent further abuse.
Senior Advocate Sanjay Singh, representing the NGO, vehemently argued that the unchecked proliferation of such practices severely undermines the fundamental objectives of existing child protection laws. He emphasized the urgent need for governmental intervention to safeguard vulnerable children.
Following the arguments, the Court issued notice to the government, mandating a response. Advocate General PK Shahi and Advocate Vikash Kumar appeared on behalf of the respondents.
The next hearing for this critical matter is scheduled for July 25. The Court’s directive signals a significant step towards ensuring the safety and rights of children in Bihar’s entertainment sector.
